I am many things. Consistent is infrequently one of them. At least where it concerns posting in blogs and finishing manuscripts. I keep trying, though. I have an optimistic streak that simply will not die (trust me, many have tried…), and so here we go again…
I’m entering NaNoWriMo — or (Inter)National Novel-Writing Month — this year. This is a contest that challenges people to write a complete 50,000 word novel from start to finish in 30 days. You have from November 1 – 30 to write word 1 to 50,000. You can pre-plan before November, but you cannot put the actual story down in any part until the month itself.
Of course, I accidentally decided to do it 9 days before Go Time.
One of the reasons my first book out was over 350 random first lines — instead of an actual book to follow any ONE of those lines — was because I keep getting sidetracked by shiny things. One of those shiny things attacked me eight days ago. I was minding my own business, toiling away in utter futility on my time travel romance novel, when I got struck with the inspiration to write out a blurb about two down-on-their-luck Scottish highwaymen.
I’ve decided I’m not going to pants it this time. I’m going to go as organized as I can get. To that end, I got a one-page summary fleshed out, straight out of the gate, followed by a series of scene index cards, which I used to then create the expanded outline. I’m currently putting off the rest of the character profiles I really should be doing…
I’m also going to blog. I know, I know, I’ve said this before. I really mean it this time. I’ve set alarms on my iPad to remind me and everything! I even know what I’m going to say!
I’m going to create a post series to cover my NaNoWriMo adventure, and to also extend past that to cover the editing and publishing of the (hopefully!) completed novel.
I thought of the perfect name for this post series in the WalMart the other day. I, of course, was a moron and forgot to make a note of it.
Comment below if you can think of something snazzy before I catch up to my train of thought.
I’m also going to be attending the Austin NaNoWriMo kickoff party at Dragon’s Lair on Anderson Lane. If you’re doing NaNo and want to come hang out with other
masochists hopeful winners, please be there! It’s from 10pm to 1am! (And then there are write-ins all month, various locations, most of which I’ll probably be lurking at while the kid’s in school…)
I am teh excite! This is my chance to finally… FINALLY… force myself to finish something! And then I’ll finally have something to publish! (Yay!)
